Guidelines for submissions

Tertium Linguistic Journal accepts articles representing diverse theoretical approaches and perspectives typical of specific modern language studies. We are interested in the research of language in communication primarily from the synchronic, broadly socio-cognitive perspective, including cognitive linguistics, linguistic pragmatics and anthropological linguistics.

Submitted articles are usually grouped into thematic sections: contextual linguistics (socio-pragmatics), varieties and registers of language, translation studies, intercultural communication/ anthropological linguistics, semiotics, and foreign language teaching.

Formatted template

Manuscripts, prior to submission, should be pasted into the following template, which was prepared based on the APA styling:

It is recommended that authors pace the article piece by piece into the template when submitting. Alternatively, they can also follow the guidelines as summarized below.

Articles

The articles should be submitted anonymized for a double blind review. All author names and affiliations as well as explicit references to their own publications should be removed from the in-text references and the reference section before submission.

Each article should be written in British English or Polish and contain a theoretical/research section, followed by analytical section (e.g. questionnaire results, own statistical  analysis etc., in other words, the author’s own data). The articles  should be approximately 6000-9000 words and contain numbered sections (1, 1,1, 1.1.1 system) including Introduction and Conclusions. The paragraphs should be indented by 0.75 cm, except the first paragraph in a section, which should be all left-aligned. Paragraphs should not be separated by blank lines.

Abstracts  and keywords

The abstract should be a single paragraph of maximum 300 words in English and contain information on subject matter, research perspective, research material (source, their nature and quantity), and most important conclusions. It should be followed by up to 5 keywords, which best represent the article content. The abstract should be translated into Polish and placed below the abstract in English (automatic translation of the title, abstract, keywords is acceptable – the editors will correct the Polish).

Font sizes

The font sizes should be the following:

article title – 20, main section headings – 14, subheadings – 12, third layer headings 12 (and in italics), the text – 12, block quotes and examples - 11.  The entire article should be written in Times New Roman.

Line spacing

The line spacing should be 1.5 for the article’s main body, single for the abstract. The spacing around the headings should be the following:

article title (40 above, 0, below), main section titles, incl. Acknowledgements, Appendix and References, as well as Polish “Streszczenie” heading (24 above, 12 below), all subheadings  (18 above, 6 below), block quotes, table headers and figure captions, Polish title and block quote references (12 above and 12 below), keywords (24 above and 24 below).

Capitalization and alignment

The main title should be capitalized according to the English convention. All headings and subheadings should be left aligned and in lower case except for the initial word and proper names. Titles and headings should not be followed by full stops.

Block quotes

Block quotes should be minimum 4 lines, should be indented by 0.75 cm and should be followed by the in-text reference in a separate line below .

Table and Figures

Tables should be numbered and preceded by a header (e.g. Table 1. Header - without a full stop, unless it is a sentence), while figures should be followed by a numbered caption (e.g. Figure 1. Caption - without a full stop, unless it is a sentence). All tables and figures should be included in the text when submitting. They should also all be referred to in the text of the article.

Footnotes

Footnotes should be kept to the minimum and should be indented (0.75 cm).

In-text references

In-text references should follow the citations and paraphrased text in brackets and should follow the pattern (Author’s surname date: page).

End references

The capitalization patterns in English are different from those other languages as shown below.

All names of authors in non-Latin alphabets should be translated into English and placed in square brackets following the original names as shown below. The Latin alphabetical order should be used in the reference section. It is recommended to translate titles in non-Latin alphabets and less known languages into English.

The dates original editions of publications should be placed in square brackets preceding the contemporary editions.

Abbreviations for dictionary titles could be used in the text but their full reference should be included in the references.

The reference section should use 1,5  line spacing and conform to the following patterns:

Special issues

We also encourage special issues edited by Guest Editors. If you think you would like to edit a guest issue, please contact the Editors at [email protected]. The procedure is described below.

  • The prospective Guest Editors of a new special issue submit a general description of the issue with abstracts of individual articles to the journal Editors, who consider it, and if it meets their approval the detailed timeline is negotiated and then accepted by journal Editors and Guest Editors.
  • Guest Editors receive and read the articles which are to constitute the issue. Only when an article is approved by them can it be submitted to the journal .
  • Submitted articles are subjected to the external double blind peer review independently of the Guest Editors.
  • When the articles receive an acceptance, request for changes or resubmission review, they are returned to the authors with the journal Editor's decisions. When the publication is declined, the Guest Editors receive the reviews as well
  • Once the articles reach the Copyediting stage,  the Guest Editors receive the copies of all of them for final reading and editing.
  • In the final stage the Guest Editors submit the Editorial article which is subject to approval and editing of the journal Editors.
  • The special issue is published when it is scheduled.
